    What is the Schengen 90/180 rule?

    Visa-free visitors may spend at most 90 days in any 180-day period inside the Schengen area. The 180 days are a rolling window, counted backwards from whichever day you are being assessed on, not a fixed period that resets on a set date.

    Does the day I arrive count?

    Yes. The day of entry and the day of exit each count as a full day of presence, even if you arrive late at night or leave early in the morning.

    Does the clock reset after I leave?

    No. Nothing resets. Each day you spend outside the area simply drops out of the window once it is more than 179 days old, which is what gradually frees up allowance again.

    Is it 90 days per country?

    No. The allowance is shared across the whole Schengen area: a day in Spain and a day in Germany both consume the same 90 days.

    Does a residence permit or a national long-stay visa count?

    Time spent under a residence permit or a national D visa issued by a Schengen state does not consume the 90-day short-stay allowance. This calculator counts short-stay visits only.

    What happens if I overstay?

    Overstaying can lead to a fine, a removal decision, or an entry ban recorded against you, and it is visible to every member state. Treat the calculation as advisory and confirm with the authorities of the country you are entering.
